Portfolios

Student portfolios went home today. Please take some time to go through the portfolio with your child. Ask lots of questions and enjoy the discussion! All of the work in the binder stays in the binder for the year so it can be tracked and referred to at any time in the classroom. Please sign and return the portfolios by Thursday so they can be used during interviews. As usual, if there are any questions please let me know. Thank you for your continued support.

The Great Pumpkin Inquiry

On Thursday we created a "How to Carve a Pumpkin" piece of procedural writing. We then followed our directions to create 4 excellent Jack O' Lanterns! The students predicted which pumpkin they believed would have the most seeds and estimated how many seeds were in their group's pumpkin. A few students were pretty close with their guesses! Each group created a strategy to count their seeds, some counted by groups of 5's, while others counted by 10's and 20's.  Their last task was to solve how many seeds our class had all together. They followed their problem solving criteria and discovered that we had 1700 seeds all together! It was an awesome day!

The Results

Here are the results of our stem experiment. Some of our predictions were correct!
Our class was interested to see that the water level had changed after we left the stems overnight and all the leaves were becoming the colour of the water. We now know that the stems carry water all the way up the stem and into the leaves.

Looking at Stems!

Today our class did an experiment to explore the function of stems. We wanted to see what would happen if we placed celery in a beaker of coloured water. Each group used a different colour (red, blue, orange and purple) and came up with a hypothesis. Here are some of our ideas:

- I think that the stem with turn the colour of the water but not the leaves.
-  I think the stem and the leaves will become the colour of the water.
- I think the water in the beaker will be at the same place tomorrow.
- I think the water in the beaker will be lower because the stem will have drank it.
The students wanted to explore further so we took a piece of celery that was split in half and placed one side of the celery stem in red water and the other side in blue water. We had many ideas as to what may happen:

- I think the celery will turn whichever colour is put in first ( we added red first)
- I think the stem of the celery will be half blue and half red.
- I think the celery stem will be half blue and half red and the leaves will be purple.
- I think the entire celery will be purple ( stem and leaves)
- I think the stem and leaves will be half blue and half red (based on which side is dipped in the colour).

Check back soon to see the results!!
